Unfortunately and especially in today's Covid climate, we seem to be seeing an increase in the number of people living on barely floating boats and they are most often burdened with alcohol and drug problems. I see a lot of it all along the Gulf coast. But they are easy to spot and easy to avoid. Do try not to anchor too close to them as they will sometimes try to board you to see what they can take. On the whole, though, boating has never been better or more fun. Very nice article. I am now searching for a carafe like Tom has.

You're correct Cap'n Solo. Like many I focus on the good. Still it is a wise mariner who is aware of the rest. In anchorages there are often areas where like minded folks gather. Checking decks (cluttered or clear) is one aspect I look at when considering where to drop the hook.

Currently I'm on a "make Seaweed great" kick. The new microwave is a decided improvement. I'm thankful Mr. Uber drove me to Walmart so I could select one. If he's reading this, "Thank you Sir" goes out to him.

The carafe or a glass lined thermos would definitely be useful. I can see sailors on watch bringing a thermos on deck during watches. The carafe is a good choice for coastal cruising where rough seas are not an issue.

Thanks Cap'n Coen. There are a lot of these small conveniences that are often overlooked. As I mature (as in older than dirt!) I do reflect more. Appreciation for all I have is a given. I truly do have a wonderful life. It is my wish that others do the same.

For Tom something as mundane as a hot cup of coffee is a thing of joy. Do the work (make a full pot) once and reap the fruits of that labor all day. There's a lot to be said for that.

So, of course, I had to search for glass vacuum carafes. They're expensive when new. Keep an eye out at the thrift shops and I bet you find one eventually. 😊

Ahoy Janice, What a coincidence that you did an article about the “oldie but goodie” glass vacuum thermos. Recently while cleaning out garage we came across a couple of them. We debated if we should keep them and then remembered how great they were the last time we made a night passage. Made our coffee, added our condiments....hot coffee was ready for us all night. They are definitely keepers. I saw them for sale at Sams not long ago.

I'm not certain if this is important enough to take up space aboard Seaweed. For folks on larger boats though I can see where this would be a great addition. Good luck finding one for yourself.

I believe a lot of sailors will find these useful. Thanks for letting us know where they are sold. That will be useful. I'm certain on an overnight it would be handy.
