Electrical issues from Brother Bart on 5 Sep '23

You are doing a wonderful job describing an otherwise difficult topic. Thank you for doing this. This is a great service.

Thanks Brother Bart. from Janice aboard Seaweed on 5 Sep '23

I do appreciate the kind words Brother Bart. Can you tell I was a home school mom? :) Seriously, I am thankful for your comment. J.

wiring from Pam on 5 Sep '23

Hi, Janice. Good to hear Idalia didn't give you trouble. I was keeping an eye on it. So, if you want to upgrade the 50 amp that are being used as 30 amp outlets to 50 amp outlets, that will work? Was that the thinking, "maybe someday I'll upgrade"? Take care!

Actually Pam... from Janice aboard Seaweed on 5 Sep '23

The three wires on my 30 Amp power inlet are 10 awg. The new air conditioner draws more power, although well within specs. The wire was old. Seaweed is 40 years old so when I had the opportunity to replace the old wire I did so with the same 10 gauge triplex (3 wires) ... I did that.

What I actually should have done is upgrade to 8 awg wire, which is a larger diameter. The bigger the wire, the better. Less than a month after replacing the wire I regret that I did not upgrade to 8awg.

So in retrospect this I my most recent lack of foresight. Hindsight is 20/20. And too what was once correct is often superceded by better options. Though Sparky did the 50A receptacles that may well have been the best/highest quality choice at the time.

I believe all of us have made decisions that were spot-on/exactly right that later turned out to be not-so-brilliant... like only glancing at the Power Connections page. 😉

Thanks for your note. There are a gazillion projects underway. A few things are actually finished. I know: shocker!!!

More shortly. And thanks so much for your comment. J, where autumn has arrived.

hurricane from Gary on 6 Sep '23

Hi Janice. I was thinking of you during the hurricane. Glad that you are well. A very good article on the electrical system. Thank you for posting! Cheers, Gary

Yes, excluding surge all was well here on the peninsula. We were fortunate. I did take pictures and will be popping up those tonight or tomorrow. Then back to the final 50A problem. Well, actually I believe it is that switch shown on the front which is the problem. Finding a solution is the question.

But first I wanted to show those pictures... and yes, as I was walking out the dock my Buddy flew to greet me. He was eager for hotdogs. The manatees are back too. I heard a dolphin last night along with a commotion under the mangroves. I suspect we have one less snook and one happy dolphin.

I do hope your boat is coming along well. I do like her lines. She's a classic for certain. Thank you again for the tablet. Honestly, that changed my life -- on a par with the kindle. :)

Thanks for your note. J.
